On this day in 1885 -

On this day in 1885 Luton Town Football Club was formed at an open public meeting at the Town Hall. George Deacon had come up with the idea of a "Town" club in 1883 but the proposal was met with opposition as it was feared it would be the end of all other clubs in the area.

The matter lay dormant until Wanderers changed their name to “Luton Town” at a secret meeting in January 1885. This upset many football lovers in the town. The use of a secret meeting was bad enough but more importantly Wanderers did not have all the best local players so it would not be a true representative Luton team.

J.C. Lomax and his brother E.H. Lomax arranged a meeting for 11th April and advertised it by posters throughout the town. The Luton Reporter newspaper recorded that J.C. Lomax was the first to speak.

“Mr J.C. Lomax was called upon to give his opinion upon the proposed formation of a Town Club, said he was most emphatically in favour of a proposed Luton Town Football Club, not, however, for the breaking up of any other club.  The reasons he advanced were that the proposed club would give more scope to find out who were really the best players to play in the town matches: it would give them more opportunity of showing what they were as football players; and it would form a good club for the training of young players, who could thus work up to play in the town matches.”

Only a few Wanderers committeemen objected and the creation of a Luton Town Football Club was voted through.

          Whoops, apologies - correct

I do remember it was a day aside of a siblings birthday. Though what I will add is was also the day/night (13th) that there a major fire in All Saints Church in Leighton Buzzard. As we arrived back from Birmingham I still remember the smell of the burning in the town centre...

On 12th April 1885, ye olde Luton Outlawes had a post from "Hispaniola" complaining about a lack of foresight and demanding to know why the Lomax brothers had not delivered on their earlier promises.

Billboards were put up around town calling J.C. Lomax a snitch for telling the truth at a public meeting.
