Players coming back on after treatment

Posted by Pilkinhio on 7/4/2024, 8:35:03

Yesterday Mengi had treatment and it felt like ages before ref let him back on. Midweek we had two off for what felt like ages.

What’s the ruling here or is it just how the ref feels? If we’d conceded with players off the pitch I’d have been furious and it could have been hugely costly.

Still buzzing from yesterdays great win though

I counted yesterday, he was off for 24 seconds.

...the issue with Mengi's was that the ball and 'play' at the material time was in the area where he was waiting to come on and in that situation the refs are instructed to extend the time.

It's the same sad act that spends 24/7 on here impersonating all the regular posters. His life is even duller than yours. Which takes some doing to be fair!

Referees have been told this season to wait 30 seconds before allowing the player back on. I expect they also won't allow them on if the ball is near where they are on the touchline, which I think was why Mengi wasn't allowed on for even longer than 30s.

The Laws of the Game still say a player can only re-enter the game once play has restarted - no mention of 30 seconds. The 30 seconds malarkey is guidance given to referees presumably to punish teams that used injuries to waste time - but it affects those not time wasting too.

Never understood why if a player is injured he has to go off. Especially if caused by opposition

...clearly to make teams think twice about feigning injury and treatment to break up the game - you do see players 'shaking off' knocks far more than previously. Overall it seems a good change.

To stop players pretending to be injured presumably.

So an opponent can do a really bad tackle ,yet the other team gets penalised

If the ref gives a yellow card they shouldn't make the player go off. At least, that used to be the guidance - it's hard to keep up on whether it's changed yet again. Sometimes though they still make them go off even when it's a yellow, no idea why.

...the one caveat is if the offending player (assuming it was a foul) is booked the injured player can receive brief treatment without having to go off.
