4 wins needed to stay up
Posted by MentalHatter on 18/3/2024, 11:54:13
Taking into account possible points deductions and making futile guesses at how our opponents run ins will go I reckon we need 12 more points.
4 wins from: Bournemouth (H), Brentford (H), Wolves (A), Everton (H), West Ham (A), Fulham (H).
Fulham game could be huge if they have nothing to play for, likewise if West Ham's European run continues their mind could be elsewhere by then... Pointless speculations...
Away games at Tottenham, Arsenal and City are all free hits
Our recent form is obviously poor, but understandable given our injury crisis. All of the bottom 6 have been struggling recently with only 2 wins amongst us in the last 6 matches- so there is maybe some 'hope' there.
Agree EE. We've won three home games out of fifteen played, so quite why it would be assumed we will win three of our last four is sadly pie in the sky stuff.
Zilch from Arsenal, Spurs and Man. City so it's looking bleak to say the least.
Our problem has been not winning against the teams around us, Saturday being a classic example, and our inability to keep at least half a dozen more clean sheets which could/would have made a huge difference.
We all know that if you apply cold, hard logic to this it's unlikely we'll win enough matches to ensure survival without points deductions for others, but we shouldn't have won 3 in a row in 1990, nor should we have won at Maine Road in 1983, then there's the NJ escape season.
Not "pie in the sky" at all to say that odd things happen in April and May, quite the opposite, it's almost certain.
I'm quite sanguine about it all to be honest. What we have achieved is awesome. All the experts predicted we would basically get annihilated and we've not only done "okay" but we've gone out there and really tried to attack it and play football.
Given our next four games I think it's likely to look bleak, we'll possibly look a bit adrift, but like you say crazy things can happen at the end of the season.
Either way, I think we've done ourselves proud and the club will emerge the stronger for it all.
Them losing to Fulham wasn't good for us - they're always likely to throw a spursy or two like that in over a season, can't see them doing it twice in a row though
On the other hand, they do seem to play only one way which means at least we have a chance of making it a ding-dong affair a la Newcastle as they like to attack. The same can't be said of Arse and City which unfortunately would seem to be an exercise in keeping the scoreline respectable.
