Labour's election plan plot 'exposed' as Rishi Sunak 'must remain PM to boost results'
Labour want to keep Rishi Sunak in place as Prime Minister because they think he will be easier to defeat than another Tory leader at the next general election, it has been claimed. With rumours swirling of a plot to oust the PM, opposition figures have been accused of "doing all they can" to make sure he remains in the job.
They have even borrowed from the Boris Johnson playbook of political warfare to make sure their plan succeeds. During the 'Partygate' row in 2022 the former Prime Minister attempted to salvage his premiership with what he reportedly dubbed himself "Operation Save Big Dog".
Instead, Labour have launched "Operation Save S*** Dog" which aims to attack any potential candidate to replace him such as Kemi Badenoch or Penny Mordaunt. It has sparked concern among Tories who think the PM should be removed before the election to give the party a better chance of winning.
A source told the Daily Express: "There a lot of concern that Labour's new plan - 'Operation Save Sh*tdog - has been swinging into action over the past few weeks.
"They seem to be dusting up any Cabinet alternatives to the PM as soon as they emerge. A few weeks ago Keir Starmer did an entire PMQs going after Kemi Badencoh.
The same will happen for Penny Mordaunt and Grant Shapps, they said. "It's 'keep the man in place and keep shutting down all the alternatives'. They are playing whack a mole with emerging members of the cabinet."
It comes amid claims MPs on the Right of the Tory party have held talks with moderates about uniting behind Ms Mordaunt to replace Mr Sunak.
Discussions have apparently been held about the possibility of crowning her as the new leader in a "coronation" if the Prime Minister faces a confidence vote in the coming weeks.
The move would mean an astonishing third change of PM since the last election - but would avoid the need for another divisive leadership contest.
Ms Mordaunt has been identified as a potential standard-bearer for Tory moderates in a future contest in which Right-wingers such as Kemi Badenoch and Suella Braverman would start as favourites.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has also emerged as a potential "unity candidate".
