    Smart watches/exercise trackers and that.

Posted by jimmyp on 22/12/2023, 17:17:39

I had to have an ECG the other day because, during the course of my routine blood pressure check (120/80 since you ask) my resting heart rate was mid fifties.

Now, I run 9-10k twice a week and do 2-3 40min HIIT sessions which I've built up to over the course of the last 2-3 years so I'm actually just a super athlete and my heart rate merely reflects this.

Anyway, I now have started to wear a watch again so I considered getting one of the aforementioned to track heart rate, generally but specifically during exercise, and wondered if anyone had any particular experience with them.

Was particularly looking at Fitbit charge 6 and Samsung Galaxy watch 4 as mid-range. i.e. not so cheap as to definitely be shit. I did see one for under €30 in Super U if I just want to suss out what I want and how I get on with it.

Thoughts? Thoughts about apple products will be met with the usual.

    Cheers, Jim

Garmin Venu 2. Great for running and all the other stuff you mentioned. Garmin Connect app and particularly the website good for all the data etc

It looks bloody lovely but that's well into what I'd buy if the €30 Super U special did what I needed it to but didn't last long or looked a bit cack.

I didn't amass my considerable wealth by chucking £300 about on a whim, after all.

I mean, maybe that's the answer. I use my phone for music, GPS and therefore pace and such, as it is, so really I only need to add heart rate. A few pretend to do ECG which might be useful, I dunno. It's why I ask to be fair so thanks for the input, it does look a lovely thing.

        Cheers, Jim

Ooh, also, I forgot to mention that I was also considering a Garmin Forerunner 45 if you had any knowledge of such.

I've had a few forerunners and they do much the same as the venu. Main difference is the display which is a bit old tech and not touch screen. Still great running watches though.

Well, the 45 is under £100 which is attractive as a first timer. Not really super fussed about touch screen, I've had to lock my phone right down so it doesn't accidentally do a load of shit in my pocket so if I have to go out of my way to do something with the watch it's not a problem.

I do go out about 06:00, so I could do with being able to operate it in pitch-dark if that's possible.

              Cheers, Jim

I honestly don't know why it has become such a fashion. Your resting heart rate seems excellent if unusually low. Excellent, because it should extend your life. But checking it all the time and adding in the steps counting is not really useful. You can see distance you plan to run. You either walk a lot or you don't. But the whole thing becomes a bit like being on here, or twitter or whatever your "thing" is. Habit.

My mate, who has run more and for much longer, says the same about base layer which he deems a mere fashion accessory. But I will apologise to absolutely no motherfucked for covering up when it 'feels like' -10 with something that's not going to boil me in my own sweat when I get going.

It was really more a case of not really having known what was going on with probably about the most important component of the whole deal. I know that my recovery time is pretty bloody decent and have taken a few heart rate measurements but a couple over the course of running a couple of thousand k isn't really a profound understanding of my heart's fitness.

I do get a bit geeky about my average pace and that so, sure, you're not a million miles out but I'm 50 and the reason I do it is to make sure I'm going to live longer so having an eye on something the quack's have deemed worthy of a second look seems sensible. These are the divs who had no answer to my knee pain when I got over 6k other than to 'have a rest for a couple of weeks'. £100 to an osteopath told me weak gluteus medius.

          Cheers, Jim

Even more impressive. I thought you would be around 35.
My dad is in his nineties now, but has always had a low heart rate, yet the only exercise was golf.
Had a pacemaker fitted in his mid eighties, as he had serious dizzy spells. Seems it was going even lower. But now he has dementia and (harsh though some will see it) I wonder if it was the right thing.
Not that that should put you off your efforts. We are all different.
As for the knees,,,,, in some ways, they need looking after, more than the heart. Better (for me) to live an active "average aged" life, than a longer inactive one. 👽

              Tbf, I look around 35.

How much longer that's going to be the case I wouldn't like to guess.

              Cheers, Jim
