    Checking mot details

    Posted by Lu5hatter2 on 10/6/2019, 9:45:13

Checked online to see when my mot expires, one site claiming to be the DVLA wanted my card details to charge 50p for the service, does anyone know if this is a scam?

I'm pretty sure if you go the gov.co.uk website and search when is my car tax due the MOT date comes up as well. Don't pay a penny.

thanks Ron, I was worried the 50p was the bait for a bigger haul

I must say that that was my reaction. It needs a lot of 50p payments to make it worth setting up a website and keeping it going especially as a lot of the 50p card payment would be lost in charges.

Apparently they take £5.95 a month after the initial 50p bait, found this about the site I nearly used. https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/vehicleinformation.uk

I wanted to find out when my MOT was due and this came up first in my search. I like others did think that it was connected to DVLA. I was happy to pay 50p for the initial information but at no point did I see any indication that I would be charged £5.95 per month there after I only realised this had happened when the money came out of my account the day after the 50p. After reading other reviews on here I went onto my account and closed it I also emailed them and said I was not happy that there wasn't enough indication that you needed to pay £5.95 per month. To give them their credit they have said I will receive a refund. All I can say is just check what you think you are signing up for.

Amazing how some of these sites get away with it - same as those offering a comprehensive MOT history of any car your are buying...for a small fee..

Only ones you should pay for are a credit / finance check or a MID search

Yes it is. The last MOT date will be written on a barcode label stuck to the inside of the car's bonnet. Garages legally have to do that. Watch your head when looking for it. You're welcome.

Always a good idea to avoid sites that do not have .gov.uk in their site name.

Nag if you click on my post above without opening the whole thread you can see the picture I posted, it looks official, even .gov. Uk could be a fake site, don’t like being asked for bank details

Yes, but I'm a bit concerned by the spelling on the green logo
" DVLA licenced (sic) data company"

Thanks, good spot, so it should say “licensed” then?, it only wanted 50p and I didn’t mind the cost, but putting card details in rang alarm bells, looks like I have avoided a scam, the site jam sandwich posted was official and free

I doubt it would be a dangerous steal your details type scam.
I imagine it just imitates the DVLA site in the hope that people will pay 50p for a check. This site will then go to the actual DVLA site and do the check for free and send you the details.
There's similar sites for renewing passports and applying for visas etc.

Makes sense, but these sites shouldn’t be allowed to pop up when you google the question, the service is free, people are being ripped off, and trusting people with card details who are pulling your pants down is a definite no

That's Google for you, letting any old business on when you type in a service, as long as they pay.
