Where was the gasworks then? Was it Sainsbury's Bury Park?

The level of contamination can't be that high surely otherwise it would have been considered to be a serious health issue and one that would have been dealt with?

900 million tonnes were cleaned at the Olympic site, prior to 2012 games.
Almost all of it was reused...

Maybe it's a bit like asbestos in that if you have it in the walls it's fine as long as it's not disturbed?

Digging up that land and reopening the river might expose some pretty nasty contamination which people simply weren't aware about the dangers of when the land became the industrial site in the 1970s?

According to Section 2.2 of the Archaeological Watching Brief published on behalf of Luton Town Football Club in March 2017 they were demolished in 1972.

                Early 70s I think.

Found some nice old photos just now showing them in all their 'glory.' (And whilst I was looking a nice old shot of the Kenny came up which is always worth showing!)

Aren't they the ones that are still there ? Difficult to judge from that how far away they are from the terrace.

Those houses directly behind the Kenny end in the pic above, some of them were owned by the club and partly used as our ticket office and pools/lottery ticket sales too, at one stage.

I remember buying tickets for our old LTFC Special trains in the early 1970's from the 'houses' there as well.

No, it shows the houses that were where the concourse is now, between Beech Path and the railway line (busway).

Clean streets? You're ####ing joking I hope, dog shit everywhere back then and massive industrial air pollution. Lead poisoning from petrol fumes, huge contamination leaks from the likes of Laportes, no life at all in the river. Did you even live in Luton then?

They were still there in 1971. It was the ambition of the college mountaineering club to scale them and paint "salt" on one and "pepper" on the other. But it never happened.

I remember walking down an alley right next to the cooling towers with the cooling water cascading down. Quite a sight and sound.
