    Inspired CB signings

Some people shook their heads when we let Cuthbert go. No way we are top of league without these two in my opinion. Having said that, I reckon Sheehan would have been totally fine.

Recruitment of Bradley and convincing him that this is the place for him (no doubt conversation over many months) has been so key.

I think most people were OK with Cuthbert and Mullins going, especially given the expectation that Bradley would be replacing him.

Pearson was the signing none of us expected. And, according to the experts, he was "shite" and "a waste of money".

Those experts included many Barnsley fans.

I remember reading/hearing many times in the early weeks of the season that Pearson and Bradley can't play in the same team - it HAS TO BE Sheehan plus either Bradley or Pearson but NEVER EVER the two of them together. Many were puzzled why it was so blindingly obvious that that was the case but Jones just couldn't see it !

Has there been any 'why did we bother signing Baptiste if we're never going to play him?' posts yet? They can't be far off.

Posted no doubt by the same people who would be crying why we didn't plan ahead if we didn't sign him and there was an injury to Pearson / Bradley

I spoke to Baptiste at Shrewsbury train station straight after the match there (he was going to Manchester) he said that he was only signed for cover with no guarantee of a start. He said Maclaren didnít fancy him at QPR and to come to Luton was covering his money.

Cuthbert and Mullins as excellent as they were at the time were clearly going to be left behind this season.

I've been quite struck at the gap between L2 and L1 - I thought the gap was much narrower than it proved to be. Collins in particular seemed out of his depth in the first 6/8 games/

To be fair, we suffered 3 of our 4 league defeats in the first 7 games (making our season so far even more remarkable!) and drew 2.

So it's fair to say, I think, that the whole team was finding its feet and learning how to turn exceptional performances like Portsmouth away (allegedly, I missed that one) into wins. We were also still to settle on our best back four - which isn't by any means the four many wanted to see selected at the start.

Jones was playing around with the formation as well, disastrous 3 centre-backs at Peterborough eg.

It was a learning curve for him too, not going to hold that against him (though there is much I would!) - and P'boro only really got at us for 20 mins then he changed it.

New players, formation experimentation - all fair enough at the start I'd say. He was also reluctant to play James Justin initially, and we all know what happened when JJ became a regular! (Starting with the annihilation of Accrington Stanley)

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong. His formation made sense at the time and his game plan was fine.

Much rather be losing games in the early stages when experimenting rather than any other time in the season.

I'm not of the mind that he was reluctant to play Justin more that he couldn't play 3 full-backs/wing-backs.

I whittered on so much about JJ not being included that my mate who sits next to me asked if I was his agent!

That sharp learning curve has given us such a strong basis. Yep, we'd all take those early defeats for what has come from them!!

A learning curve and the reluctance to leave the captain out and looking to accommodate him at all costs.

I wouldn't say at all costs - Sheehan only played in the first three league games, and has subsequently hasn't been a starter in any league match. I understand why Jones wanted to give him a chance, but he soon realised that he had better options.

Sheehan, I am led to believe by insiders, is a massive positive influence within the squad and the club.

Good, Id expect that from a seasoned pro and still club captain who is undoubtedly one of the clubs biggest earners.

Am I right in thinking that you've had some sort of Twitter 'spat' with Sheehan?

I'm hoping that he has a role to play on the management/coaching side under whoever comes in as manager.

Everyone seems to think that will be Graeme Jones, but I have no idea. Not focussing on that at all at the mo, just enjoying what we're all experiencing right now. Such brilliant times for us, the club and the town.

We had a disagreement and then we met and had a frank discussion. (Nicky Toons 50th)
Twitter discussion was nothing personal, as he then understood - he was a top fella and gave me some good advice .... and was absolutely charming to Esme.

I have nothing personal against him but Im always astounded when people say "I hope xxx has a role to play" in any new set up.

We know nothing about their coaching/managing capabilities so shouldn't be offering jobs out in the BEST time in our history just because someones a cine bloke.

I understood that GJ never wanted to be a number #1... he didnt jump at the job so personally Id like us to move. We are offering a job at our most exciting period - I want the lucky appointee to be busting their balls to make themselves available and WANT the job.

And yes, Im available if called/

In the case of Sheehan we actually know that he has been playing a key role in coaching since NJ left.

I share your thoughts about the other Jones.
