Histon on a Tuesday night ( Think we won 2-0.Krocka or was it Kovacks scored on his debut?)....ran out of Loo paper at half time in the Ladies, I had to make a cup of tea on a tiny trestle table in the far corner...next to a row of Conifers, where a rather large Horses head was poking through having a bit of a sniff....also bought a Burger at half time that resulted in the Shits for most of Wednesday...
The obvious ones are the ones where there was a lot at stake. Notts County, losing to AFC Wimbledon at Manchester, Everton etc but up until the game started those were great days. One away game still lives in the memory, and one of my first, is losing to Oldham in the old second division. Stuck on a big terrace with the wind howling, rain chucking it down and the whole place seemed to be covered in darkness. A lacklustre performance saw us lose 2-1. Not many of us braved the trip but those who did drifted off towards the end and left a handful of us to clap the team most of whom had run off to the changing rooms as soon as the whistle went. The only exception was Ricky Hill who walked right up to us and applauded our support. Typified Ricky. Not just a legend for being the great player he was. Waiting around for the coach and then a long depressing journey home getting back late to a dark and deserted town centre. Had to walk back to Hockwell Ring to round things off. Aye it was grim oop north. I went back the next season too to see a 0-0 draw!!
Ebbsfleet is distance memory!! I started supporting Luton in 1982 (glory hunter) and tell my boy stories of old!! Great wins against big teams. His 1st match was 8-0 against Hayes & Yeading!!! (instance supporter). Can you imagine the stories he's gonna tell his kids?!! ...... Skelmersdale in the FA Trophy!!!!
Histon!! Sitting in the pub garden (like the Royal Oak in Barton!!) we used to just take over villages!! Dartford night match when every time they kicked the ball high it went above the "light" of the flood lights! (great evening though) Matlock in the FAT, no actually that was a great weekend, but Matlock FFS!! and the FAT FFS!!
Easy - the York first leg play off at their place. Cold & pi55ed down all game, no roof on the away end, took hours to get dry going home and then they got the suckerpunch goal after us missing numerous opportunities.
Horrible night that'll never have to be relived *fingers crossed*.
...and the goal came from a free kick given when their player went down with no Luton player anywhere near to being close enough to have touched him. Is it any wonder that many Luton fans are happy to see them struggling when you look at the recent history involving them.
That Gillingham match was my two daughters aged 4 & 8 very first Luton game 1998-99. Took them on the Junior Hatters coach.
Stood on that open terrace getting drenched, tried to plead with a wanker jobs worth steward to ask if we could transfer through to the dry seats under cover, telling him this was my girls first game, one only 4 and they were not enjoying being saturated at all ........C**T didn't want to know and I was starting to lose it with him.......fortunately a senior steward saw what was going on and did the sensible/amicable thing - let us through!
They only went a handful of times again. Eldest was mascot v Wycombe 1999-00 1-1 and youngest, mascot at Stoke 2000 when we won 1-3, that useless Peter Thomson scored two.
Last time they went was another Junior Hatters trip to Swindon 2001, we won that one 1-3 too under BFJ.
He did. Yes got the wettest I have ever been at an away ground. I remember trying to shelter from it at half time but it was impossible. Got in the car and within seconds condensation was running down the inside of the windows.
