I usually went barefoot when hiking, and usually bruised my feet really bad. I found that the more I did so the tougher the bottom of my feet became and the easier it was when encountering rocky and other rough areas. (Once I went feet first into a bunch of thorn type bushes and I usually always got wood slivers too.) My knee-high moccasins are soft sole, but great for hiking. The hippie-type sandals I wore on occasion on trails but they were not good for off trail hiking or wet surfaces.
