Wore one on the beach, when swimming in a lake/river, and even to a hike once. No problem so far. And of course to some more private locations.
I think loincloths are acceptable for most people where almost-equally revealing beachwear is. At least it is so on this (european) side of the Pond. Some lcs do in fact cover more than swimwear.
