Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, primarily as a preemptive strike to cripple the United States Pacific Fleet and prevent its interference in Japan's military expansion in Southeast Asia. The attack was aimed at deterring the U.S. from interfering with Japanese actions in the Pacific region, particularly in response to American economic sanctions and the oil embargo imposed on Japan. Additionally, Japan sought to establish dominance in the Asia-Pacific region by neutralizing U.S. military capabilities in the Pacific.
In terms of its immediate goals, the attack on Pearl Harbor was a tactical success for Japan. It dealt a significant blow to the U.S. Pacific Fleet, destroying or severely damaging numerous ships and aircraft. However, strategically, it ultimately backfired. The attack galvanized the American public and government, leading to the United States' entry into World War II, which ultimately spelled doom for the Axis Powers, including Japan. Therefore, while it achieved short-term objectives, in the broader context of the war, it can be considered a failure for Japan.
P.S. The three US aircraft carriers of the Pacific Fleet were fortunately out of port at the time of the attack. Two good films to watch are “Midway” and “Tora! Tora! Tora!”, Ronnie
