It was only the 251 prefabs that had been completed by the end of 1946.
By the end of 1946, only 50 of the 'Tin Houses' had been constructed, the rest being finished in the late Summer of 1947.
They were British built by the British Iron and Steel Federation and desgned by Sir Frederick Ernest Gibberd for the Ministry of Works (created 1940).
Litherland did really well postwar in the construction of housing, considering the short supply of building materials, bricks/cement etc, with strict quotas of supply by The Minstry of Works.
By the end of 1946, besides the 251 prefabs and 50 steel houses, 14 pensioners houses in Field Lane had been built with another 24 being completed in 1947. Work had aslo begun on 62 traditional council houses.
Sadly though, a man lost his life on the construction of the Anderson, Harrington Roads and Moss Lane houses. He was a roof sheeter and fell 20 feet on to the concrete floor fracturing his skull, he died at Bootle Hospital.
Cheers,
Ronnie.
PS. I have 2 great photos, which I will put up tomorrow.
