Japan surrendered and that was that. The famous photo of the sailor and the nurse in Times Square was Aug 14, 1945. My father was among those about to invade Japan when the war ended, and he always said he and the others expected to be killed in an invasion of the home island(s), or at least many of them would. That's a natural response after the carnage during the island hopping.
Perhaps a parent or grandparent among the posters here was in the same situation.
