Seat belts are pretty much universally accepted as saving lives. Pre-April 2020 there was no consensus that masks worked. If anything, there was a consensus that cloth masks were worthless. Also, technically no one has to wear a seat belt. You can always walk, ride a bike, etc. People must buy groceries, see the doctor, etc. so they are forced to wear a mask. Finally, I agree with the shirts/shoes analogy assuming that the business is requiring it themselves and its not part of a government mandate. If a business wants to require a mask, then thats their right.
