The Timothy Ladd (T.L.) Smith name appears on county records as early as 1886. Timothy and "Laura" are on the 1900 Gove County census. They were ranchers in southern Gove County along the Smoky Hill river. They owned several sections in Township 14S, Range 29W. The Goodwater and Tiffany Ranches were owned and operated by T. L. Smith. T. L. Smith was also involved in the first bank in Grainfield. There are comments about T. L. Smith in the history records. One reads as follows:
