Posted by John Mullany I wonder if in the far distant future one might have to pledge allegiance to the European Union?

Lord Haw Haw found out he'd sworn allegiance without being aware of it. Whilst I'm perfectly patriotic but it does strike me that if you can be prosecuted for dealing with an enemy power during times of strife then what's the point of a pledge of allegiance? Would refusing to pledge grant one some kind of immunity allowing one to deal with the enemy? Hardly, so it doesn't really matter. Plus, your average FBI traitor, Robert Hansen, pledged allegiance like there was no tomorrow.
