Would you pledge allegiance to your own country?

I've lived in the UK for years, but I'm not a citizen. I would not pledge allegiance to the country, certainly not while the Queen is at its head. Would I pledge allegiance to Ireland? Possibly, if everyone else did. I don't think you'd get many offers, anyway.
Would you pledge allegiance to your country, if asked? Do you think people should be asked?
