I have to disagree. I think they're at least as good as the Narnia series. I think if you'd actually read them, you'd see that part of what they deal with is that the world is a "complex and sometimes cruel place."
Anyway, they're kids' books, so you can't compare them with, say, Joyce, but they're really not bad at all. In fact, they're a lot better than most of the tripe most people usually read.
Also, I just can't understand people getting upset about people reading books. How can that be a bad thing? I actually don't think it's all hype. I have a twelve year old who doesn't particularly like to read unless something is really good, and she really liked these books. Believe me, she would not read a book because of hype. She might buy it, but you couldn't make her read it. And kids are actually reading these.
All the action figures, etc., are crap, but I think what people really do mostly like is the books.
Also -- a lot of books for kids have some sort of stupid "social problem" in them. I don't think kids like that any more than most adults do. Most kids books are pretty earnest. The HP books have good characters and interesting plots, and they are not earnest in that sappy way. It's pretty hard to beat a book with good characters and a plot.
