In my pursuit to become a proficient LC Smith smith, I have been gathering cheap parts to build a shooter gun completely rebuilt/refurbished by me. I have a FW 12 ga and a 16ga Fulton Special that are my 1st two patients to be on the table. After wards I may tackle a little higher end project.
I have a real nice field grade, original, LC stock. The problem seems to be the inletting is real close but the vertical face of the stock head and the inletting of the receiver tang do not match. It is as if the tang needs to be bent 1/8" to 3/16" upwards which will allow the stock to rotate up so that the vertical face of the stock head will sit flat against the vertical back of the receiver. I think I would rather destroy a $10.00 receiver than a $100.00 stock.
What will be my down side to carefully doing this? Since I plan on CCH'ing the receiver I imagine heat would be my friend.
If the bend will still allow the proper stock drops then you can do the bend. Prior to CC the action will need to be annealed anyway. If the stock is the same frame style, FW or Reg. it will be close but will not interchange. fitting will be required. Many stocks had enough drop at comb and heal that current shooting styles are not compatible.
You’ll need to anneal the frame to safely bend it, the floor plate will need to be bent also. Your internal parts might get funky but they can be refit. Good news is if you ruin the frame I have over 100 frames. I can probably help you. After case coloring you’ll need to “ hard fit” the parts as well. Good luck! It’s nice you are turning parts into guns.
