1884 LC smith Hammer Gun

I am looking for a "J" spring for the above shotgun. If I can't find one I'll make one. Does anyone have one for sale or the drawings to fabricate one. Thanks, Will

Will, I had the same problem with my 1884-5 gun. I couldn't get the for-end to stay on and tried bending it, still not right. I had one from Numrich, and it worked fine. I'm guessing you got your stirrup and are now getting to the final stages of your overhaul. Good luck and good shooting.

Hi David, I'm getting close to the finish. Numrich has the later type J spring, but none from the earlier guns. Will a later type work? I am also having the forearm wood reproduced using my old one as a pattern and better match the grain and color. I'll finish it and do the checkering myself. Thanks, Will

Will, I compared my old one to the one from Numrich, and they were the same, except for the bend and length. If I remember correctly, I had to take a slight amount off the tip of the new one to fit right. I've seen on some guns, that the "J" spring is arched more than others, and some it was almost straight.

I have fixed a loose forend in the past by having a drop of metal TIG welded on the tip of the J spring, then filing it down until it snapped on snugly. I clamped the spring between two blocks of aluminum to act as a heat sink, and didn't harm the spring. It didn't take many thousandths to tighten the spring up, maybe 0.020" at the most.

Thanks Tom, I'll have to start with a new J spring as the old one was broken off at the eye for the pin. Hopefully the new one will be too long, but if not I will keep your fix in mind. Will
