ok well thanks for answering my last post i was just woundering with my number fws56788 would that mean mine is one of the last three or second to last .410 to recive a number and would this hold any more value if my .410 was the last FEILD grade model .410 to get its number.

It makes it a little more interesting but doesn't add a lot of value in my opinion. A .410 LC Smith is a pretty valuable gun, just be happy you have one and enjoy it. DLH

I think i will enjoy it... But the history of the L.C. Smith co. has me.. From my understanding its a rare one already, So Everything ealse is just a pluse... I just have one wounder about L.C. co. I read that there was an x number of .410 I believ?... That they found befor closing andthey put out late is there any truth to that?

So if they did would those have a diffrent serial number prefix other then fws? Or would the serial number be all over stamp or maybe just one number overstamp on all parts?

Just curious---where did you get your information about guns being built that late? I was under the impression that all double gun production ceased when the floor in the factory collapsed.

In the early sixties, my Dad and I answered an ad in the Washington Post offering L.C. Smith Premier Skeet guns for sale. We visited a gentleman in Wheaton, Maryland who had several 12 gauge Premier Skeet Grade 12 gauges, all brand new, for $225.00 each. The guns were poorly fitted, had obviously been put together from unrelated parts without hand fitting. My Dad and I decided not to take advantage and never ran into the seller again. I have always had the idea that the guns were put together at N.F. Strebe gun works in District Heights, Maryland. Mr. Strebe bought surplus parts from many gun companies and made guns from some. He was quite a Fox collector and bought the remaining Fox parts from Savage Arms.

Bill, I believe we've had this discussion before--- I, too, can relate to your experience, except the P Skeets were in a shop in Va Beach (Hadsell's Gun Shop)-- also in the early '60's. As I recall they were $295 for both 12's and 20's. Of course the S/N's were not in the Marlin production sequence. I don't recall any "aftermarket" .410's ever surfacing--do you?

Interesting...but I dont think mine is a make-shift gun... Would a build sheet tell me about serail number or what all info comes with one? My L.c. was built in the 50's so I'm actually thinking its from the factory collapseing.. but idk... can i order a build sheet an any number?

Ricky, I strongly urge you to order a Research Letter on your gun---it will answer your question about the production date of your gun. The form to use is available on the left side of the Home Page, and--- while you're at it, consider joining us as a member of the LCSCA and save yourself $20 on the letter, as well as receiving a great newsletter four times a year plus some other nice "perks" !

I thought I would add I have a single trigger ejector 410 all pieces, still in the white, that needs to be fitted up, and has no serial numbers. Some guns a one point made it out of the factory and out into the world.

Yeah, you got me.... Or im 26 and that i just got a rare piece of history that i know nothing about besides.. its a 1950s .410 Smith feild grade thats serial number 8th to last going off fws56796 wich was the highest numbered gun. I also know that its 1 out of 2,375 (1913-1950). So what i dont know is how many field .410 where after mine and the only way to find that out is if the story is right... So going off the info that the highest number .410 was fws56790 that would mean mine could fall in as one of the last three .410 Smiths(in the Ledger) to get its number. Possibly the second to last .410... so i know i need to pull papers on my 2 L.C.'s and aswell as fws56789 to find out what cal.and grade she was. but some things i feel wont be in the report like how many field grade .410? why number would be restamp on some guns? If the number changes are in records? What is the highest number .410 field So if you are reading this here it is in a nut shell what i know and what i dont know.... Correct me if im wrong, add to the story. either way if you know the answer im looking for please get back to me thanks

Ricky, You've received all the information that we can furnish from the published information that we all have access to (Brophy and Houchin's books). The last recorded serial number in the ledgers is 56800 (from Houchin's book), so it is possible that your gun is the last .410 produced. The ONLY way to answer your question is for you to order a Research Letter, as I suggested in an earlier post ! No one but Jim Stubbendieck has access to the archives, and if you will specify in the "remarks" column of the research form that you would like to know if yours is the last .410 Field, perhaps Jim will accomodate your request. In any event I personally would not put a substantial premium on the value if it was the last.

The value of the "last Smith .410" is contingent on the quality of the gun. If it is constructed from a bunch of unfitted parts and screwed together without hand fitting, its value is not as high as a lower numbered gun, well fitted. However, I have not seen a .410 "parts gun" and I assume yours is not one of those.

ok well thanks to all i guess i will try and get ahold of cody to see what they can tell me... I realy didnt want to run so many numbers but for $150 might be worth it. Then maybe i can get the answers... i just dont see why there is so much trouble to get achived numbers confirmed wheather its one or the other that as said.. Ricky, our records keeper was away and just returned, so give him a day or so to "acclimate" and I'm sure you will find out what you want to know. Also what is the $150 for. Our Research letter is $60 non member, $40 member, so as Dick said before for $65 you join and get a letter.

i dont remember were i read that marlin continued to put guns together for and up into the 60 s...but im sure they did.....any one else ever read this.... ricky i have a 16 ga field grade that the nos are within 40 or so of you guns...they tell me my gun was made in 1949..my gun s numbers are but about 60 from the the serial no they say is last of the numbers...so figure out the lc smiths numbering tecnique and youve figured out a big puzzle...yes sir i still say they made guns after the floors fell in...hope you figure your gun out...i hope its the last one made i think this would be neat... charlie

I am very interested in finding out the answers to my inquiries. I picked her (.410) and its big brother(12 gauge) up realy pennys on the doller threw family. Not noing anything about L.C. Smith sxs but threw all the old post i was able to get the info i have.. I real just need the L.C. SMITH STORY confirmed and by this i mean production numbers wich I dont think will be in the built sheet, i need that info befor i order my sheet because as it sits i only have 2 L.c's and a already need to order 3 sheets.. but thanks and ill be checking post for answers so anything ealse is much thanked. Oh and just they both are shooters and lookers...
