Lance, all barrel actions were set using jigs, so they are all very close in regard to frame style. You cannot fit a Regular frame to a FW frame and vice versa. |
As far as year of manufacture, or grades, again there were jigs used.
I have bought some barrels on Internet gun auctions and on one, a Grade 1 circa 1899, Damascus, it fit right on the gun I wanted it for, an F Grade hammer gun made in 1908. I also have another set of 26" barrels (original length) circa 1900 that also fit this gun perfect.
Sometimes it just takes a slight bit of filing on the barrel lug where it meets the hinge pin. When I do this I candle the hinge and lug and look at the fit.
Now, the hardest part is fitting the for-end. I worked on one for a few hours to get it to fit both barrels, but you cannot take much off the for-end metal, you have to work on the barrel loop for the fit.
The best thing to hope for when buying other barrels, is that they do not fit, or fit perfect with no play. If they do fit and have play, it could be a lot of work to get them right.
