Syracuse arms hollenbeck gun

I have a syracuse arms co hollenbeck model double barrel shotgun. It is a grade 2 and very low serial number #4572. Im trying to find a value. Any help in this area would be great. Thanks!

Your serial number is actually not that low, as being one who had done a lot of research on SAC guns, I'd need to see a number below 100 to get very excited. As to value, I never assign hard values to another's gun; but the Grade 2 and Grade O SAC Hollenbeck/Syracuse guns were the company's sales leaders and are the most common models found today. So unless your gun has some special feature/s, or remains in near new condition finish wise; $200-400 is about the market (and less, if the gun is damaged, has pitted barrels, or has been unprofessionally repaired/restored). You can get an idea what is being asked for such similar guns by checking the on-lin Gun Broker auction and watching those auctions.

There is engraving all along the barrels. Everything seems to be in working order and just some minor scratches on the stock. Seems after being cleaned properly it could be fired with the proper ammunition. Thanks for your help.

Bro. Scully - There is an enormous difference between 'seems' and 'the barrels have been checked by a qualified double gun specialist, have an adequate wall thickness, are of sound structural interity, and therefore appear safe with shells for which the gun was originally designed.'

The Grade 2 Syracuse/Hollenbeck gun came standard with Damascus barrels (the "pattern" to which you refer); and were never cataloged with fluid steel barrels. Grade 2 barrel steel was later referred to as "Improved Damascus"; and after about serial number 8,000, that name was roll-stamped atop the right barrel. SAC's Improved Damascus barrels exhibited a beautiful pattern; but were lower quality Damascus tubes, as this model retailed for only about $35 out the door. If you wish to know more about SAC guns, the various grades, different models, features, etc; an entire series has been published in the Double Gun Journal. I would suggest you contact folks at the DGJ if you are interested in having those articles and information; they have a web site.

Fellas, maybe you can help me with my Hollenbeck. I recently inherited a SAC Hollenbeck 10 ga. It is in poor condition and I wouldn't dare fire it but I am curious how old it is. Serial # is 1037. Any help you could give would be appreciated.

Production started at Serial number 1 in 1893; so this is a very early example. The gun could have been made in 1893; or in early 1894, as factory start-up delays slowed initial production.

Hi Tom, I have a SCA Hollenbeck. The markings are as follows: Serial # 3078 Other Markings - Pat D Sept 26-33 (as far as i can tell) 3 on the barrel The Hollenbeck Made By Syracuse Arms Co. Looks to be in good shape. Not beat up and normal patina. I have no idea where to go and I know you did some articles on SCA Double's in DBJ.
