my gun has the old type extractors with the wheels on the side of the barrel lump....it lifts the shell when the gun is opened but releases the extractor when the gun is completly open so that if you push on the head of the shells instead of catching the edge of the rim you push them right back into the barrel...is this the way it is supposed to work or is something broken inside the wheel like thing??

The first style joint check is a cam that has a spring and short pointed arm in it that once the gun is broken open, the outside pins hold it in position as the cam rotates to move the extractor rod. These can be pushed down when gun is opened and is normal as there is no force on them.
