Were the first style ejectors reliable? And with a clam shell release, should it be possible for the forearm to come off just by pulling downward gently? Thanks for any/all help.

They are reliable as long as they work (like anything else). The trouble is there are no parts available for them. The problem I see with them is the ejector sear gets worn, and doesn't eject them as strongly and then fails. Or the spring that performs double duty on the "J" spring and ejectors is weak or broken like this one was. Made new one out of hack saw blade. The clam shell works just like the banjo release, roll and pull the forend off. It's quite possible that someone had it apart and the spring loaded part is not fitting into the slide on the fore end iron.

Norm, I have a Quality 5 12 ga with the type 1 ejectors. When I purchased the gun it was missing the ejector kickers and they were next to impossible to locate. After finding a pair that I could borrow to duplicate I had 12 sets made. With these parts being so hard to find I figured I would probably have a call for an extra set sometime in the future, so I do still have extras for those who need them.

Thanks guys. I ran across an early A1 for sale today, and had no snap caps to test the ejectors. David - good thought on the clam shell release. Hard to tell what's going on without taking off the wood - the gun sports a beavertail with non-matching serial # iron. Trying to get a feel for what it would cost to rectify the "issues" the gun has, and how reliable it would be after repairs.
