I was looking at one of the 1970's made LC's by Marlin. When I took the foreend off and thumped on the barrels no ring. They look virtually new could it be the high vent rib or are the barrel ribs bad?

Did you seperate the barrels from the reciver? You might try to slide a thin piece of cardboard in between the ejectors / extractors and the barrels and try ringing them again.

The way I recommend ringing the barrels is to remove them from the gun and remove the ejectors. Support the barrels over a finger by the hook, and ring by tapping near the center with a piece of wood or the plastic handle of a screw driver. The note you hear should be a bell-like tone similar to a wind chime. The reason is because you have made a wind chime out of the barrels. Maximum vibration amplitude is at both ends of the barrels. Ejectors can keep the ends from vibrating freely.
