I am looking for some input on if I should have my gun redone. I have a FL Field grade 20ga SxS made in 1937. The gun looks in very good condition the wood is original and the bluing is good. But before I got it someone polished off all the case coloring and shined it up. My question to all of you is should I have it redone or just leave it alone. Also who would be a good person to send it to to be worked on? And would this hurt the value of the gun?

my guess would be that it wont ever be a million dollar gun so if ya want it recased send it to buck hamlin 1-636-479-4304 he has totaly redone several lcs for me including the case colors.very good job and very reasonable too.

That's very true Terry, I was once told " If pretty guns all shot great we wouldn't shoot anything else. All a pretty gun does for the shooter is make himself look better when he misses". There is something about a correctly case collared L C Smith that does catch everyone's eye.

Yes that is what I am thinking. I think I want to get this gun back to what it is supposed to look like. The wood is in great condition and the bluing is original and the gun locks up solid. I did talk to Buck Hamlin and some others yesterday and I think I might just want to get the gun redone. I will shoot it once it is all finished.Now it just falls on me on how much I want done and how much money I want to spend. Thank you all for your help. My question to you is would you bother with all of this or make the gun look its best?

Hello LCS Shooters, I am aware of two cases of L C Smiths that had their case colors restored by gunsmith ABC and returned to their owners looking very nice BUT the shotguns would not function !!! These L C Smiths were then sent to gunsmith XYZ to have the mechanical problems corrected so that they would shoot. In many other cases everything worked out just fine the first time around, BUT be prepared for problems and return trips to the gunsmith or another gunsmith. It is best if you live with in a convenient driving range of your gunsmith, you will most likely need several trips there to get some projects successfully completed. Ask your gunsmith if he test fires your L C Smith with live ammo many multiple times BEFORE he returns it to you ?? By many multiple firings I mean shooting it LEFT to RIGHT at least 5 times and then R to L 5 more times with no errors or failures. If he does not then find another gunsmith. Buck Hamlin has refinished several older SxS's for me and does EXCELLENT work. He remains very busy, and you may have to wait a few months; but the quality is worth the wait.

This is a very personal decision. If you will be happier with fresh case colors, by all means have it done. If the rest of the gun is brand new, new, well done case colors will complement it. If the gun is well used, even perfectly done case colors may look out of place and make you want to restore the whole gun. It's a shame to distress fresh case colors in order to make them match everything else.

Well after getting your thought's and just thinking about it I am going to get the whole gun restored. I did talk to Buck Hamlin a few times and he said it would not hurt the value of the gun at all. Plus I will get a real sharp looking gun when it is all done. Will post before and after pic's when it is all done. Thank you for your input.
