I am trying to determine exactly how many L.C. Smith shotguns were marked Long Range and how many were marked Wild Fowl. I don't know if Wild Fowl shotguns replaced Long Range guns, or if production of the two designations overlapped. Serial number 191104 is the first to appear in the records with the "W.F." designation. I wonder if any shotguns were marked Wild Fowl with lower serial numbers and not recorded as such in the books. Do any of you have a Wild Fowl with a lower serial number? Or, do any of you have Long Range shotguns with serial numbers above 191104? If there is no overlap, I can determine how many of each were made. If there is an overlap, we will never know those numbers. Thanks for your help.

Field, 12 gauge, serial # 198621, military markings (crossed cannons, flaming bomb, RLB), "WILD FOWL." Interestingly, it does not have the 3 inch chamber mark, and the chambers measure 2 3/4 ". This is not specifically responsive to your questions, but I offer it FWIW.

Most of the Longrange guns I have seen have the 3 Inches stamping on them. The Wildfowl guns that I have seen do not have 3" chambers. Is is just coincidence that the Wildfowl guns are 2 3/4" chambers?

Serial #RE74269, Ideal grade, ejectors. Not marked with either Long Range or Wild Fowl. Does have reinforced 32" barrels and 3" chambers (and so marked).

Jim, I know this isn't pertinent to your research but I just traded a Field L R s/n R87467 3" (with stamp) that doesn't have the reinforcing splinter ---- FWIW.

I have to take that back about Wildfowl guns with 2 3/4" chambers, today at Cabela's I handled a Wildfowl Ideal Grade, 3" Chambers on water table, 32" barrels, ejectors, Hunter One-Trigger.

Thomas, It is that one. I didn't check to see if it has the re-inforcing splinter. Next time over I will check. That one is marked Wildfowl on the lug, they also have one marked Longrange that I didn't look at.

I have a 12 ga Field grade L.R. with 32 in barrels . Serial number 55710, it was finished March 26th , 1924 and shipped June 1 , 1924 to the Tufts- Lyans arms Co.
