12ga with 21/2" chambers

Not knowing to much about the L.C.Smith and just getting into one my question would be if I should do anything about the small crack on both sides of the stock at the back of the side plate? I have a 12ga with 21/2" chanbers--26" bbls--featherweight model in field grade. It is a 1941 gun which is in good shape and I want to use it as a shooter. Found a name of David Trevallion in ME on web.Does anybody know of him? Do smoething with the chambes?? Leave alone? Shoot low prssure 23/4"? Not know just what to do at this time I quess just looking for someone who knows more than I do about this?

George - I also have a featherweight 12ga. Elsie with 26 and 30 in. barrels - I use the gun for hunting quail and skeet. I can strongly recommend the Polywad Vintager Doublewide loads for this type of shooting. Pressures are low and they carry 7/8 oz. of #8 shot. The shells are only 2 1/2 in. in length but don't let that fool you - they get the job done. The Doublewides have Polywad's patented spreader discs in them which widen the patterns considerably. You can google Polywad and find their website. They are sold in cases of 250 shells for $105 currently, or last time I looked. Good luck fixing the stock and shoot that Elsie every chance you get! I am a member of this association and recommend you join - I have learned so much.

George: are the barrel flats stamped '2 1/2" chambers'? Are there British proof marks also? Could you please post pics, or e-mail an ultra close up pic by jpg attachment to revdoc2@cox.net?

George, welcome to the world of the L.C. Smith. For what I know "elsies" in 12 ga . were always manufactured with 2 3/4" chambers.
As for the cracks behind the sideplates, probably from using high velocity loads, or some screws loose.
David Trevallion is probably one of the best stock makers in the country, but what you need is to have someone acra glass the stock. Here on the forum our own Dr. Bill Hambidge does such a job and also highly recommended by Ken Hurst is Boone Berlin (910-220-3332).
Also I would shoot low pressure loads under 8,000 psi. in any "elsie" or older gun.
