The L C Smith Parker Challenge

First of all, Congratulations to all who participated in the L C Smith Parker Challenge on both teams Hammer & Hammerless. This was the first year in the past few that I was unable to make it to Sanford to cheer you guys on. Win or loose it is still a shoot about sportsmanship and the charitable contribution made from the proceeds. Over on the DGS BBS site there are some posting that it is no longer a "challenge" since the Parker boys have won it 3 times in a row. The question is being asked weather to bring in another well known gun maker, or even drop the challenge event completely. Also asked what does the L C Smith Team Need to compete? One answer " Better Shooters" Better Guns" When did the the L C Smith Parker Challenge Cup stop being a FUN event for all of us who have a love of these old guns, be they Side lock or box lock to enjoy a weekend of shooting and raising a little money for charity? Sometime we take life just a little TOO seriously, I don't have the answers. This is just my opinion and I could be wrong

Skip, I think it was just the one guy going off about it not being a challenge. With the faceless internet, it's often hard to distinguish good natured ribbing and being an ass. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt.

Congratulations to all who shot, and especially to those who qualified for the main event - from both teams.

I, like you could not make it because of a conflict with the Virginia State Sporting Clays Championship but my thoughts were with you. Thanks to all that attended and gave their time and money to such a worthy cause. Give your son my best and we are thinking about him. Mike

Thank you for your take on tnis but with respect I disagree. Terminolgy challenge connotes a contest where there is a winner and a loser. Surely there is fun involevd but at the end of the day the winner gets the plaudits and the loser licks his wounds. The worthy charity benefit will happen whether a good fair fight or a one sided slam. Why has our team lost 3-X in a row? Better guns, I don't think so. Better prepared shooters, probably so. Soi long as the attitude is this is a fun contest wer'e going to come in second best. may be it is time to move over and let Team Win or Team Fox get a shot at it. We need to get serious or get out.

As one who had the honor of shooting for "Team" LC let me throw in my two cents worth. First let me tell you that there was not a single person on the team that did not go to the firing line intending to do his best and to win back the trophy. The qualifying scores for both teams were very close, with the Parker Team being up by only a hand full of birds indicating that either team was capable of beating the other. But let me tell you what this shoot is about from my personnel experience. My gun broke a top lever spring just before the main event. Two LC guys were set up under the tent doing minor repairs on other guns. They dropped what they were doing to work on my gun so I could use it in the Challenge. Unfortunately, after almost 2 1/2 hours they were unable to complete the repair. While my gun was being repaired several members of the LC Smith organization offered me their guns to use. I choose a "Crown Grade" twelve bore to use. I had never even held a Crown Grade before Saturday let alone shoot one and this gentleman who I had never met before reaches into his car and hands me this beautiful firearm. This is the essence of the Challenge, not who wins or looses. The comradeship comes first, the guns come second and lastly comes the Challenge itself. When winning becomes the most important factor in the weekend at the Southern, I will stop attending. Congratulations to the Parker boys, we will be there again next year. So please keep your powder dry and remained focused on what is really important.

The Challenge Cup pin I received when signing up for Event 1 clearly says PARKER BROS vs LC SMITH Challenge 2008. What does your pin say? Or did you not sign up to shoot?

I suggest that those discussing who issued the chellenge to whom take it up with Mark Conrad of PGCA and Tom Archer of LCSCA. They are the ones that put together this event, so they can answer this without the B.S.

It seems obvious to me from your post that you were not at Sanford and that you did not lend your superior shooting skills to our team effort. How could you make an intelligent comment on anyone else's attitude, preparation, effort, or performance in the Challenge over the last three years? You simply have no idea about the matter, and come across as a typical Monday morning quarterback. I can tell you that the ten members of the team and others who tried to qualify gave everything they had to the match and hated to lose as much as you say you do.
As for Team Win or Team Fox, where are they? I see a few guys shooting 21's, but hardly ever see anyone shooting a Fox at any of these events.
And before you challenge the Parker Spelling Bee team, you are going to have to get a better attitude about winning, and show us better preparation and performance than you gave in your post, or you can't be on our team (and don't try blaming it on your bad typing skills--we are on to you.).

Matter of fact I was atSanford. I live there nearby. I watched the quals but left before the challenge for a memorial in Apex. You state much about preperations but what i remember of the quals were hunter type shooters obviously unfamilar with competition repeatedlky calling for target with the saftey on. Many of the L C guns were field types with few target high stock guns being used. Speaking also of prep how do you prep without shooting registered targets in real competition? Easily done check of the 5 stand ruling body, N.S.C.A. shows those abesnt or those that are members but haven't shot registered targets in the 7 year history period. I don't know where you shoot but Win M21, 23 guns are commonly found at shoots and Fox guns are incrasingingly seen. Why not more of them at Sanford? because so far the Pareker and Smith organizations haven't invited them. Don't get me wrong I want to see our team win but come on now lets get serious.

Just a couple of thoughts from a first time attendee at the Southern who plans to return every year possible from here on out. The wife, who doesn't shoot anything but bank accounts, and I left for the Southern on friday morning. About thirty miles out of VA Beach a 12'fiberglass extension ladder slid off the top of the truck in front of us and the old Dodge Ram crushed it at 65 into a million pieces that rained down on the GMC pick-up following a bit closely behind us.(That'll teach him!) Not a great start. After checking the tires we continued on to Sanford and arrived a little after noon. What a great set-up. Shotgun Disney World! Met Frank, Chris, Jim, and the rest of our fearless leaders at the Elsie display and signed up for event 1 for 10:00 am Saturday morning. Bare in mind that I've been shooting for just over a year and had no misconceptions that I'd actually qualify for event 2. The wife and I had an enjoyable supper with the Vintagers where we saw both Elsie and Parker friends, and got to meet Dr. Drew Hause, Becca & Chick Candler, and many others. When it was my turn to try out for event 2 I was quite nervous and probably missed the first four or five birds. My second station had the dreaded 'A' bird as part of its true pair and I was feelin miserable all over more than anywhere else! A glance over my right shoulder for a comforting and supportive nod from my wife landed me look of "Are we shooting blanks today, or what?" It was at this point that a friend, one of the Parker Boys, and not just any Parker Boy, but one that ended up tied for High Gun on the Parker squad, came up behind me, sat down, and and offered a few kind words with a little advice thrown in. Really knocked the edge off. I crushed the pair, the dreaded 'A' bird reminded me of that damn ladder (it was in so many pieces!), and went on to shoot a 19. Not good enough to qualify for event 2, but better than I'd anticipated. What Mr. Jim Winesincessantly fails to appreciate is that friendship, sportsmanship, and a good time are what appear to me to be the true goals of the Challenge event. For me any way it was a resounding success in that regard. There are plenty other venues in the shooting sports for cut-throat competition. We handed it to em in the Hammergun event, and the fact is, they just plain out shot us in the Challenge event. Next year....well we'll just have to see! Thanks to all who gave their time and energy to provide truly enjoyable weekend, and hopefully the good spirits and fellowship will continue for many years to come.

Way to dance around the issue and ignore the point. Maybe if your spelling and grammar were better, or if all of your sentences were intelligible we could understand what you are really getting at. Is it that we need to field a team of all NSCA shooters? Are we to believe that the Parker boys are shooting their Parkers in registered competition rather than their Krieghoffs or Perazzis? Are all the Parker boys shooting high-stocked competition guns during the Challenge? Were the Smith guys making the team dropping targets because of safeties left on? Are the Fox guns absent at Sanford because the Parker and Smith guys don't invite them (the Southern includes all makes of side-by-sides)? Please! Come on, Jim, you are the one who needs to get real.

By the way, what was your qualifying score? That is the big point here for the Monday morning quarterback. Please don't miss it this time.

I hope you spelled your name correctly as I copied it from above. The whole event is about fun and charity. It is also targeted toward the average shooter or hunter with his gun of choice. I for one can shoot much better with my quail hunting gun than I can with a "target gun". In fact last year I shot my "hunting gun" and qualified and made both the Challenge Cup Team and the Hammergun Team for LC Smith. I have never been a registered NSCA Shooter and don't plan to be. I would have participated this year but was unable to attend due to my pre-deployment training for my third tour in Iraq. You say you are part of the team but yet you do not exhibit the traits of a team player. You state that you watched the qualification. Did you attempt to qualify and help "our team"?

p.s There is a little blue check mark at the bottom of the response block with the letters abc next to it. This is the Spell Check function for the LCSCA Forum. I would suggest in the future you utilize this function. Horrible spelling only accentuates your ignorance.

Jim, I'm sure that I can speak for both the Smith and Parker teams when I say that the Challenge was born for the fellowship, not for the sake of whose gun wins what. I, for one, have attended to meet Association friends I have made on the respective sites, and I value those friendships more than the bragging rights to a particular event. I'm also confident that if Deep River could accomodate other associations for a three day event, the current attendees would at least consider it. Further, your suggestion smacks of turning the Challenge into a professional event, which it was never intended to be.
Lots of us shoot other brands--- I, for one can count seven different makers in my "stable" and, truth be told, I shoot better with a brand other than my Smiths!
The Challenge is a friendly, fun, fellowship event, and I hope it stays that way.
