Scott they were all checkered. The gun was probably well used and the ckeckering worn off. In "The Legend Lives", John states that checkering for a 00 would be 20 lines to the inch. I have measured a few Field Grades and they were closer to 18 lines. It would be no problem for a stock person to copy what your checkering is supposed to look like.
