I have not solved the problem completely but replacing the hammers and sears with parts from Nummrich solved the problem on the left lock. These parts are not very expensive and require only minor fitting. Hope this helps.

68.54.190.176Allen, I have a 20 ga FW that I have the same problem with. When I first got the gun it was misssing the cocking plate, ordered one and put it in. Recocks nicely, but have to do the same as you to open it fully. It only takes a few thousands difference to cause this I believe.

205.188.116.208I have observed the same condition on single barrel trap guns. Since they are a lot easier to diagnose I offer the following. The sear of the SBT gun with this problem is about 20 thousands shorter than the sear without the problem. Taking the stock off each gun and oberving the sear hammer assembly when cocking the gun it is apparent that when you depress the barrel to clear a shell the sear just rides up the back of the hammer behind the notch. Just what we would expect. With the short sear the hammer does not fully retract; the hammer in the none-fully-retracted position transfers a non-fully-cocked condition back through the cocking lever. That's why when you push the barrels down to free the shells you feel spring tension, you are pushing against the hammer spring. I don't know if my theory is 100% but I am confident of the problem in single barrels. Also I don't know if they were shipped that way or through the years the sears wore down causing the condition. In trap guns I suspect that amateur gunsmiths were trying to achieve better trigger pulls through sear/hammer notch work which shortened the sear. - Re: lc smith won't open all the way

First type lug 'disc and pin joint check' used 1886-1900 on extractor guns
Second type barrel stop. Barrel lug pins used between 1901 and 1913 on relatively few hammerless automatic ejector guns

67.142.130.42revdoc, I see the same thing on my Wind River restored 20. but it's the 2nd type. It doesn't happen all the time I just figured we have to allow for a 100 year old gun not being perfect. Heat may have some effect here also. - Re: lc smith won't open all the way
