With a three position safety, the forward position is "fire", the mid-position is "safe"; and the rear position is also "fire". The three position safety was primarily developed for competition shooting, as by placing a three position safety in the rear most position, the shooter can forget about losing a target because he failed/forgot to push his safety slide into the "fire" position after the gun had been put into the "safe" mode by the auto safety device. As most double gun safety devices are the two-position type ("safe" & "fire"), shooters are conditioned to automatically think their gun is in the "safe" position when the safety slide is in the rear most position; which thinking is counter to the purpose of a three-position safety. The result has been many accidental and dangerous discharges. For me personally I prefer a non-automatic two-position safety over the three-position type. And as FYI, the Hunter One-trigger utilizes a two-position non-automatic safety device as the size of the trigger unit itself leaves no room for installation of the auto-safety push rod.
