In my observation and experience, hammer guns are much less subject to stock cracking than hammerless guns. There are two reasons for this: much less wood has to be removed from the head of the stock because there is no safety mechanism and there is no internal cocking mechanism. Also the lock works are partially inletted in to the lock plates so that less wood is removed for the locks.
