The Smith gun was the "Top Gun" at the traps 1895 - about 1900, and the rear safety position allowed the competitors to focus on the Blue Rocks, not if the safety had disengaged

Another ingenuous feature is that when the hammers are cocked, one may place the safety in the rear position, just slightly open the gun, and pull both triggers to let down the hammers without concern for damage to the firing pins.
