    Personally I would not cut them. I would do as mentioned and pattern it to see where it is shooting, if fine leave it alone. The pressure by this time is down to hundreds.

    Your best chance of having barrels "fit right on" is if you can get close to your guns serial number.
    I have fit 3 barrels to this one hammer gun that I use, one is from an F grade hammer gun, another from a Grade 1 hammerless and the last a set of 32" Armor steel from a Field Grade hammerless. The first two barrels fit right on and look like they were made for it, the Armor steel barrels took some work to fit.
    The hardest thing is to get the for-end to fit your orphaned barrels. You cannot do anything to the for-end that fits the original gun, except to maybe open the back of the slot where the loop fits. The work has to be done on the orphaned barrels.

    The hammer gun mentioned above uses the same for-end for the extra 3 barrels.

    You would be correct in that everything on these guns was hand fit and to get things very close to fitting so that there might be minimal handwork was in the use of jigs.
