It might be easier if I showed a picture and then explained it. For the gun to be safe and not discharge the safety relies on the safety slide. As you can see it fits into a notch on the top lever and on the opposite end, it rests on the safety push button. This safety push rod rest in a groove machined into the receiver's top tang. When this is in place and in the SAFE position it locks the safety link (not shown) blocking the sears from making contact with the trigger plates. This happens every time the gun is opened, the safety is pushed rearward by the top lever into the SAFE position even if only one barrel is fired and then opened. There have been instances where some people have taken this safety slide out and want to put the safety back to safe themselves, never could understand that.
