Norm, there are no records of any pre-1890 guns. I have collected a few hundred serial numbers of the Syracuse L.C. Smith and the very early Fulton hammer guns that there are no records of.
I would say that is uncommon and my guess would be that the end of the barrel was damaged and cut-off (1/4"). I haven't measured any choke length in some of my Syracuse guns to see if the choke area was parallel for 1" like in the Fulton guns.
