    Norm, there are no records of any pre-1890 guns. I have collected a few hundred serial numbers of the Syracuse L.C. Smith and the very early Fulton hammer guns that there are no records of.

    I would say that is uncommon and my guess would be that the end of the barrel was damaged and cut-off (1/4").
    I haven't measured any choke length in some of my Syracuse guns to see if the choke area was parallel for 1" like in the Fulton guns.

    It would be interesting to know what yours are.
