Thanks a lot for your responses. All are good advice.
One of the main reasons to do anything at all to the stock is to aid in preserving it for later generations. My 37 year old son is very interested in guns, and he also has a son.
As stated in my original post, I am a neophyte in stock refinishing, but I have tried to research it thoroughly on the internet. My impression is that Boiled Linseed Oil soaks into the wood more thoroughly by using many applications. I understand that this deep seeded moisture results in the wood stock lasting longer than using other types of finishes. Agree or disagree?
All of this may simply be wrong, or some of you may consider it to be "malarkey". One thing I read suggested that Tru Oil was not as good to aid longevity because it dries too quickly.
Anyway, that is why I am interested in using BLO. I am concerned, however, that it will make the wood much darker than it was originally.
