    Mark, on the barrels for-end loop there is a notch on the back of the loop to catch the roller release and lock it to the barrels. This along with the "J" spring is what holds the for-end firmly on. If the roller is loose and you do not feel any tension on it, try taking a 1/4" dowel ( or a long thin screwdriver wrapped in cloth) around 12" long and bevel one end so that you can slip it under the end of the for-end and gently pry it to see if the for-end will move while rolling the release towards the muzzle.

    It is very possible with no tension on the roller that the spring (24) is broken or missing.
