Most of the hammer guns and a few early Damascus Fulton's that I have all have some pitting, some worse than others. When first viewing them before being bought and if they do not show the bores, I always ask about how they look. The ones that tell me they look like a "mirror" I am skeptical, because most of these low grade guns were never cleaned and are pitted, especially with the primers used then.
It bothered me when I bought the first couple and the seller was dishonest in his evaluation of dirty and pits, but since then I measure every new gun as to bore and wall thickness.
A few years ago someone posted I believe on the DGBBS when someone asked about pitting, his statement was, "go to an area that is open and low grass, fire into the air and find the wad, if it is malformed or cut-up on the petals, your pitting is deep, if it looks like one from a gun with no pits you are fine and leave it alone". I thought that was a good scenario.
