To restock, or not? Archived Message

I'm glad I found this forum, and I was not aware that there were so many LC Smith enthusiasts.
A couple years ago my father's gun collection was passed down to me. In it is his father's Specialty grade LC Smith. The question comes as to whether or not to replace the stock on it.
As he tells the story, he had turned it over to a friend, to take care of it, while he was in the service. His friend had accidentally gotten a minor dent in the left barrel, about halfway up. To make up for this, his friend (a cabinet maker by trade) made and installed a new stock on it. It's very very nice work, but definitely not the nice original wood that would have come on it originally. Now, as such, this story is part of the history of this shotgun. The thing is, and I noticed it is true for me, too, that it does not seem to have a "natural" point/feel to it. My dad told me that it felt and pointed the same as his grandfather's Syracuse Arms shotgun, which feels like a natural fit when brought up to the shoulder.
So the big question is, do I get in touch with Murphy & Sons, to look at getting it restocked to period correct, which should get it back to natural pointing, or leave it as is, since it's part of the family history? I'll be discussing the options, and advice given with my dad when i head down to see him here in a couple weeks.
Any input or advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
