Rick, you mentioned "welding" ...certainly that will work although labor intensive. I work in the composites industry and there are some amazing adhesives available. Could a metal plug be made and bonded in the drilled hole and then re matted? Would this save disassembly? I would be pretty confident of the permanent nature of this fix even with heat and recoil. Just an idea.
