Mike. A little info for you. The expression today may be "and the river don't rise" but it originally was "and the Creek don't rise." But it is referring not to a water creek, but the Indian tribe who fought in the French and Indian War's. I recently bought a large group of letters from 1700's- 1800's. One of the writers was a CPT then MAJ in the 3rd Indian War, and served in the siege of Lordsburg, in Nova Scotia as a Cpt, then remained there as a MAJ in charge. In a letter he wrote, some years later, he used the expression. "Good Lordy willing and the Creek don't rise." How neat is that to find something like that. By the way the writer was MAJ Sam Hale, Nathan Hale's grandfather...
