kstt Some early guns were retro-fitted with the HOT trigger; but a fair number of pre-1905(?) vintage Smith guns were shipped with the HOT trigger BEFORE the HOT trigger was ever advertised in a company catalog. I think it might have been the 1905 catalog (can't recall for sure and am too tired and lazy to dig thru my files) that first announced the HOT trigger option; as that catalog claimed more that 500 HOT triggers were already in use. In other words Hunter had been "field testing" their single trigger long before the catalog announcement; and many of those triggers were on PE Grade guns used at the traps and pigeon rings. I have owned (and featured in the DGJ) a 2-barrel set PE Grade in the 73XX sn# range with HOT trigger, and have seen other early examples. As to your HOT trigger having a different sn# than your gun, that difference is authentic. The HOT was not a Hunter Arms invention and they did not own the Lard patent under which it was manufactured. These early HOT triggers were sold to, and installed by Hunter; and each had its own individual serial number. Hunter later acquired rights to manufacture the HOT trigger in house, and serial numbers on these later HOT triggers are numbered to the gun frame.
