Hi Shelley, and welcome. You have a fine piece of history in your possession.

I do not mean to be vague, but...Some people like to recondition while others prefer to leave things original, although I think most prefer to leave a gun original as long as possible. As you might have guessed, condition is usually the determining factor in those decisions. Unfortunately, what is "decent" condition to one person might really be pretty darn good or it might be a mess.

I'm sure others will add their opinions regarding condition and other issues you might consider when making your decision, if you post pictures. David will be happy to help you. I should also point out that David Williamson has written a book on the LC Smith hammer gun, and is well equipped to answer any questions you might have. He has been a great assistance to me as I have attempted to expand my knowledge.

I would only add that if you haven't already done so, the next thing is make sure the guns bores are clean. The gun's financial value, both now and in the future, is closely tied to the condition of the barrel's bores and other metal parts. Keeping the metal surfaces LIGHTLY oiled with an appropriate gun oil is also an important step in preservation. I think the most significant damage we see in the vintage gun market occurs after a gun has been put away and forgotten, left to rust in a lonely corner of a closet. There are specialty products, but many people have used 3-in-1 oil if that's all they have around the house.

I hate to assume what you do or do not already know about firearms. Are you familiar with the way to properly clean and oil a gun? If not, do you know someone who can help you out with the task?
