Weep hole, moisture, and the potential for unseen cancerous rust...A treatment? Archived Message

In today's readings I came across threads regarding barrel separation and burst barrels. It seems rust between the barrels is a common enemy. I've seen many images of barrels with the rib removed where rust substantial has accumulated over the years. Is anything worse for our old gun barrels than rust?

Has anyone thought of or ever used one of those spray products which converts the rust to black oxide? I have used the treatments on red rust and it really does seem to arrest the process. I was wondering if there is any value to spraying some in the weep hole to attack the hypothetical rust which might be (and probably is) already present? Any worries with this approach?
