Actually John, you are kind of right about the hole in front of the for-end hanger (loop). It was to let the steam out for when the barrels where rust blued. It also helps to get any condensation that developed when the barrels were rust blued. By heating the barrels after(warm to the touch) and letting the moisture out instead of staying between the ribs and rusting. I have heard that you never want to see what is underneath the ribs.
