Hello John, Assuming that your gun is a 12 gauge, and post 1913 as it is a Field Grade, the search engine from the home page indicates it was manufactured in 1920. In regard to the three position safety, the third position aft of the first two enables you to fire the gun without resetting the safety. It is a feature handy in some hunting situations, and also was used by folks during Pigeon shoots or other games where a missed opportunity might cost you the game. Many Elsies were produced with the three position safety, and I'm sure it could be ordered on any guns not equipped with the Hunter One Trigger. Hope you get the gun, and if so you should consider joining the LCSCA. A great bunch of folks here, and a wealth of information. Good luck, John
